The State of Georgia has 2 Senators and 13 Representatives in the U.S. Congress. Additionally, the State of Georgia has its own State Legislature, which is comprised of 56 State Senators and 180 State Representatives. Corresponding with our Georgia Congressmen and State Legislators is critical to ensuring that the views of the Turkish-American community get heard. Typically, most legislation regarding Turkey and the Turkish-American community is dealt with in the U.S. Congress. However, Armenian pressure on State Legislators has resulted in 39 states commemorating April 24 as an "Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day" and in fact winning the hearts of our State Legislators can aid in our convincing our Congressmen to be sensitive to Turkish issues. Every Turkish-American should know and open a dialogue with their Congressmen and Legislators. Those who are citizens, should also register to vote so that congressmen and legislators can be held accountable or rewarded (as appropriate) for their policies important to our community.
